Description of the house
This former watermill from Moorish times is in the midst of nature. It’s a robust and comfortable house with thick walls that keep the heat outside and in cooler periods, keep the warmth in the house. Above the house there’s still the original wall that used to guide the water to the old millstones; the millstones are still on view in a space beside the house. On a higher terrace (so safe for little children), an ancient water basin has been transformed into a 6x6 m swimming pool, that can be used from the beginning of June until the end of September. From the swimming pool and the terrace you’ll have unobstructed views on the valley. In front of the house is a partially covered terrace with magnificent views of the valley and the Sierra de Alhamilla. At the side is another terrace in the shade of a palm tree. The terrain around the house gradually merges with the sparsely vegetated landscape with almond trees, olive trees, agaves and a single palm tree and here and there an old cortijo (farmhouse).
Surroundings of Cortijo Los Arcos
A mountain road leads to the village of Nijar at a 3 km distance. The last 200 meters to the house are via a well accessible country road. From the house you can go for beautiful walks; e.g. walk to Nijar over a magnificent mule path, past the old watermills, or opt for a 20 minute walk to the small village of Huebro on a slightly higher level. Huebro has one bar/restaurant that serves regional dishes, such as Patates a la Pobre (potatoes with onion and long green peppers). Nijar is a convivial village known for its ceramics and tapistry made in the region. From here it’s a 30 minute drive to the beaches of Cabo de Gata nature park. Half an hour by car also takes you to Almeria.
Layout
Basic but fully equipped open kitchen, lounge and dining section, a few steps up take you to the hallway with bathroom (with a tub, shower, toilet and washbasin) and three bedrooms; one bedroom with a double bed and two bedrooms with 2 single beds each. Shower room with washbasin and toilet.
